“Not asking can indicate a lack of interest and a missed opportunity to sell yourself,” says Susie Clark, director of undergraduate career services at Indiana’s Kelly School of Business. “It’s important to remember that an interview is a two-way street and they expect you to have questions, so show that you’re prepared and interested in their position.
Corinne M. Snell, Ed.D., associate dean for student professional development at Temple University’s School of Business, agrees. “A certain level of spontaneity is expected in any job interview, but candidates should have a list of questions prepared in advance,” Snell said. “The worst thing a person can do is indicate they have no questions or say something like, ‘Um, I think we’ve already covered everything.’
One of the biggest things for a student or recent graduate to remember is that just as the recruiter or hiring manager is interviewing them, they’re also interviewing the potential employer, says Justin Bischoff, talent acquisition consultant for Buffalo Wild Wings. That’s what impresses today’s recruiter, says Asma Anes, a talent consultant at Blue Cross, a Minnesota-based health care provider. He directs college relations at Blue Cross and is one of the first people to interview/call recent college graduates and entry-level employees interviewing with the company.
The position/job is highlighted by job seekers who ask about the challenges of the position, says Anes. Employers like candidates who want a challenge and who want to know what it takes to succeed in the role. “It helps me understand that they want to do certain tasks,” says Anes.

Anees likes it when job seekers ask interview questions like, “What are the performance expectations or how do I assess them?
“These students have been recognized for everything they’ve done over the years, albeit over many years,” says Anees. “These millennials want to know where they stand, and I can appreciate that. That tells me they want to perform well and be rewarded for it.
Training is a good question: will there be any training or coaching for this role? Anees says job seekers who want to pursue career development opportunities stand out to her.
Job seekers at the company who care about the business, the strategic plan, how the company makes a difference and whether the company is growing are “the biggest questions,” says Anes. “That tells me they care about the well-being of the organization and their future.”
Smart Questions To Ask At The End Of Every Job Interview
“The likelihood that there will be enough time to ask a lot of questions is slim, so the candidate should be prepared and have a lot of questions ready,” says Snell. “An interview is a two-way street, and employers expect job seekers to come prepared with thoughtful, insightful questions.”
Remember this though – being thoughtful and insightful doesn’t revolve around vacation time, pay or benefits they receive. This information will be reviewed over time.
1. Tell me about yourself and your career path? Yes – job seekers should ask the interviewer. This will allow you to learn more about the employer, what this person likes about the company and can create a common interest to strengthen further connection. “It’s all about building relationships, and showing genuine interest is important,” says Clark.
2. What are your reasons for staying with this company or why did you recently join the company? Their answer usually tells you a lot about the company’s work environment/culture. “For many students and recent college graduates, company culture is an important decision-making factor,” says Clark.

3. What skills or characteristics have made you successful here? This is an opportunity for you to highlight your strengths related to one of these skills if you don’t already have one.
4. I learned a lot today and am even more excited about this opportunity, so is there anything else I can offer or questions I can ask about this job opportunity? “It shows that you want the job and want to eliminate any concerns they may still have,” Clark says.
As the interview draws to a close, and if the employer hasn’t already covered it, Clark says you should always ask: What are the next steps in the interview process?
“It’s important to know what to expect and when to move on if you haven’t heard from them,” says Clark.
Questions You Cannot Ask In An Interview As An Employer
“When a candidate asks probing questions, it shows they have strong communication skills, are genuinely interested in the opportunity and want to make a long-term investment,” says Bischoff. Ultimately, asking the right questions will make this interview and the candidate memorable when it comes time to make a hiring decision.
Dara Warne, head of results at Penn Foster Education Group, says asking questions about how a company onboards new hires can impress employers:
Why this question: By asking this question, a job candidate shows an interest in the company’s culture and its commitment to its employees and their careers, shaping their success from the ground up. “The first few months in a new job are a key period for building the relationship between the employee and the employer, and the candidate wants to know that the company is a place where they can grow and mature,” says Warn. “Working with employer partners, we’ve helped develop mentoring programs where new hires develop and strengthen their workplace and interpersonal skills.”
Another good question, Warn says, is to ask, “How does your company encourage its employees to collaborate/work as a team and show integrity and initiative?

Why this question: This question coming from a candidate reveals that they already have some “soft skills” that are usually learned and improved once in the workforce. This student may have graduated from an institution that offers soft skills (or “power skills”) training as a stand-alone program and is already ahead of the curve in developing these critical work/life skills.
Good questions show that you’ve researched the position, the company, and highlight your strengths. “This signals to the employer that you’re very interested and excited about the opportunity,” says Clark.
“I appreciate it when candidates take the last few minutes to reiterate their interest and why their skills and abilities will impact the team,” says Anes. “Don’t forget to smile and give a firm handshake.”
