Ike And Tina Turner Images – Ike and Tina Turner is an American musical duo consisting of husband and wife Ike Turner and Tina Turner. From 1960 to 1976, they performed live as the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, backed by Ike Turner’s band the Kings of Rhythm and backing vocalists called the Ikettes. Ike and Tina Turner’s revue was considered “one of the hottest live acts on the R&B circuit.”

By 1956, Turner and his band had become one of the most popular live attractions in St. Louis and nearby East St. Louis club scene. Prior to the transition, Turner worked as a talent scout and session musician for Sun Records, Modern Records and RPM Records.
During this time, Ann Bullock moved to St. Louis of Brownsville, Tennessee. He began going to a predominantly African-American nightclub, Club Manhattan, where he first saw the Kings of Rhythm. He later recalled that he “almost fell into a trance” watching Turner play.
Bullock eventually met Turner and his band. Bullock, who tried to convince Turner to allow him to perform with him on stage, was given the microphone by the band’s drummer, Euge Washington.
Turner plays “You Know I Love You” by B.B. Bullock sounded regal on the organ. He was surprised by her powerful voice that contrasted with her thin frame. He asked her if she knew any more songs, and by the end of the evening she had joined the Rhythm Kings.

Back in high school, Bullock performed every week with Turner at all the local clubs. He is one of many other vocalists, mostly male, who occasionally lead the band.
She began dating Turner saxophonist Raymond Hill, with whom she had her first child, Craig Raymond Turner, born in 1958.
In 1958, Bullock sang her first record, Ike Turner’s “Boxtop”, under the name “Little Ann”. The single was released in St. Louis label, Tune Town Records. Bullock later moved into Turner’s home on East St. Louis where he trained her in vocal control and performance.
They form a close friendship and act more like “sisters”. However, their friendship turned into a romantic relationship and she became pregnant in January 1960.

In March 1960, Ike and his band recorded a song he wrote called “A Fool In Love” for singer Art Lassiter. Lassiter did not appear at the recording session at the Technisonic studio in St. Louis.
Having already booked studio time, Ike allowed Bullock to record the song as a demo with Lassiter’s backing vocals, the Artettes: Robbie Montgomery, Frances Hodges and Sandra Harding.
At a gig at Club Manhattan on East St. Louis, Ike played a record that caught the attention of local disc jockey Dave Dixon of KATZ radio station.
Dixon asked Ike to give the record to Juggy Murray, president of Sue Records in New York. Murray was impressed by Bullock’s vocals and bought the rights to the song. Murray offered Ike a $20,000 advance, convincing him to keep recording Bullock’s vocals and suggesting that he “make her the star” of his show.

She trademarked the name for protection, so if she leaves, he can hire another actress and have her perform under the moniker “Tina Turner.”
She chose the name Tina because it rhymes with Shea, her favorite character, Shea, Que of the Jungle.

As the single climbed the pop charts, from playing in clubs to theaters like the Apollo Theater in Harlem. On October 3, they made their first national television debut on American Bandstand with Tina, who was more than eight months pregnant.
“A Fool In Love” reached no. 27 on the Hot 100 on October 17, eventually selling one million copies.

That same month, before a performance at the Howard Theater in Washington, Tina decided to bleach her hair, but due to a mistake, her hair fell out. To cover up the incident, Ike bought Tina a wig that matched her stage appearance.
