It should be obvious, but I get emails all the time telling me someone’s life story or something I don’t give them to me. What a waste of time.
And the email isn’t over yet! (Sorry Jonathan, I love your work, but this email is too much to read.)
Your audience doesn’t care about your life or your problems. All they care about is how you can help them with their lives and their problems.
Likewise, don’t just send ads to your list. (If that’s not why they chose, give them what they want.)

MailChimp conducted a survey of their customers and found that the open rate of all industries on their platform was only 20.81%.
If your audience trusts you as a person (or as a brand) and trusts that your emails are valuable to them on a regular basis, they are more likely to open your emails regardless of the subject.
On the other hand, if they don’t know you well but your subject matter piques their interest or is about something they really like, they will open up too.
This is easy! Don’t send so many emails that you overwhelm your audience, but don’t ghost them either. Find a schedule and stick to it (within reason).

Whenever you write an email, you should always write it as if you were writing to someone in person. It could be someone you created to be your best customer or it could be someone you know.

Either way, write the email as if you were writing to that person. This will help you make it more personal and interesting than if you were just writing for “everyone”.

When you have finished your plan, don’t forget to revise and revise it. Make sure it’s interesting, you don’t forget to finish a sentence, and there are no spelling or grammar mistakes.

While you’re at it, ask someone else to read your email. If possible, try to find people who are similar to your audience. If not, a friend or family member will help you at short notice. They will help you make your email even better.
Before you send your newsletter to all of your subscribers, consider sending the plan you just reviewed to a small portion of your list (10-15%). This will help you see what kind of open rate your email is getting and make sure everything is going well.

The next “advanced” technique I’d like to talk about is split-testing email subject lines. (I put “advanced” in quotes because it’s so simple.)
Split testing, or A/B testing, means sending out two or more variations of your subject line to see which one performs the best (ie gets the highest open rate).
You can also share test content, such as email copy, discount types, etc., but we’ll stick to the subject line to keep it simple.

To A/B test your theme, test the idea first. Generate 5 to 10 ideas and then choose the two most promising to try.
Many email providers, like ConvertKit, let you do this automatically. Click the A/B button next to the subject line.
My last advanced technique is the smallest technique! Surveying your audience is quick and easy and gives you a good idea of what they want.
You can create surveys to determine what type of content they want to see more of, what they like and don’t like about your product, how often they want to receive emails, and more. The sky is the limit!
