NESTA training programs are open to anyone who has a desire to learn and help others. There are no prerequisites. When I qualified as a PT in 1999, I was full of enthusiasm but not sure what to do next. There was no postgraduate support. I had to figure everything out on my own, which meant I made a lot of mistakes and my progress in the industry was very slow. While my resume looks good now, I can assure you it has not been an easy ride and I think it would have been a lot easier if I was part of a community with a coach to guide me along the way. With that in mind, I’d like to share some steps I later learned that can help you grow your personal training business.

Yes, I know, “sale” sounds like a dirty word to me, but trust me, it really helps to have a little understanding of how sales work if you want to get your fill. Once you’re fully staffed, you can focus most of your time on simply being the best coach you can be.

Make sure you set aside some of your time each week to attract new business. Social media is obviously a good method for this, but it’s not just about hiding behind a screen. Get out and meet people. Stand in front of the audience and talk to them. Show what you know and what you’re passionate about and how you can help others.

Website conversions are when a browser on your website initiates some type of contact, such as a call, submitting a contact form or a free download. However, I am not talking about them. I’m talking about the later stage. Convert an inquiry, lead, prospect, whatever you want to call them, into a paying customer. You will improve this over time with more experience and more confidence. When you believe in what you have to offer to people who directly ask someone if they want to buy a PT package, it feels more like you’re offering them an opportunity than trying to sell them something. Especially when it’s one-on-one PT. You only have so many hours in the week and you are giving someone exclusive access to some of your precious hours.

If you try to convert customers by keeping your prices very low, you will attract less committed customers. If something is cheap, it is more disposable. You don’t want to be disposable. You will also have to work hard for much less. Coaches and trainers can end up quite resentful if they find themselves working long hours for very little to help others achieve their goals. If you’re struggling to make ends meet and can no longer find time to train, it’s understandable that you want to leave the industry. If you’re full but still not making enough to get comfortable, raise your prices. Don’t get me wrong. Teaching and training clients is enjoyable and rewarding, it’s not about the money if you’re a stockbroker. However, you help people live healthier and happier lives, so you should be paid what you’re worth.

The easiest way to get more customers is through the ones you already have. Make sure you regularly ask your clients if they know someone who would benefit from your training. Reward those clients who give you referrals. First, it’s polite and shows appreciation to the customer, but it will also give you an incentive and reminder to share your contact information with your friends and colleagues.

It’s More Than Personal Training

If you build a good relationship with your customer, create a community that the customer feels a part of, help them achieve results, the customer will keep coming back. Then you can think about offering other services and products that your customer would also benefit from, for example clothing and training equipment. I don’t know about you, but when I have a good experience with a company, I start looking at what else they have to offer, actively looking for more ways to give them more of my money!

Focusing time each week on improving and developing those five pillars will be a great use of your time. With a good sales strategy, everyone wins, you get more customers and more customers get your help.
