The pieces are then taped again onto another piece of paper with spaces in between for students to write additional descriptions, details, etc. in the extra space.

Make sure your story has paragraphs. They say when you change time, place, subject or speakers. They help break up the page so it’s not just one solid block of writing.
Show your reader that you have a high-quality, first-class, excellent, excellent, exceptional, great, great, amazing, second-to-none vocabulary using 5th grade vocabulary words.
Show, don’t tell style of writing is when the writer can create a picture in the reader’s mind. This type of writing avoids repeating empty words like go, big, or say.

Be sure to change your sentences. Some should be short, others long. Make sure you start sentences with different parts of speech.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like if students had dozens of resources at their fingertips? This is what we did. Two file folders are pasted together. They make a great study carrel when standing up. The students created foldable organizers and doodle notes to stick on each side of the carrel. So when a student couldn’t remember a rule for how to write quotes or needed a word for a narrative, he was right there.
This proofreading ‘trick’ won’t catch every type of mistake, but it helps students focus on some of the more common mistakes students often make in their narrative writing.
Ask the students to highlight the first word in each sentence in their descriptions. This makes it very easy for students to spot the following errors in the story or areas where improvements can be made. After the first words have been highlighted, ask students to look for the following:

Note: A common mistake students make is to start a narrative from the third point of view and then switch to the first. Ask the students to make sure that the characters’ names do not change from “Jack and Jill” to “I.”
Count the first words used. Follow the “three strikes you’re out” rule. This means that if three or more sentences start with the same word, you need to rewrite one or more of these sentences.
An easy way to correct this mistake is to break the story into parts. Underline the sentence(s) that start with the same word. Insert several lines of clean notebook paper. Ask students to rewrite the “missing” sentence(s) with complex sentence(s).
Is there a difference in the length of the sentences? Are some short and others long? Does the story contain a bunch of short sentences?

Note: Here again, use the “cut the sentence off method” so students can add space(s) creating a blank piece of paper to write the new sentence(s).
Are there really l-o-n-g sentences in the story? This is often a sign of run-on sentences or a failure to add end marks. Check to see if you have connected a series of independent clauses using coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS). A narrative essay is a type of essay that tells a story.
