Easy Chapter Books For Beginning Readers
I was a voracious reader as a child. Over the summer, I devoured a Boxcar Children’s book almost every day. When I used them all (even the holiday specials), I went to The Babysitters Club…and Nancy Drew…etc.
Best Read Alouds For 2nd Grade
I can read a whole lot more literary works than those fluff series, but those are my comfort food (sort of). Benny and Violet became my friends. Mary Anne is my soulmate. I gained confidence by solving mysteries with Nancy and her friends.
Sometimes as adults it’s easy to dismiss the value of those “light reads,” but you know what?
So, if you have elementary-aged children who need to be read to every day, but you’re having trouble finding books to motivate them, try one of our favorite short chapter book series!
If you have children who struggle to find direction in reading, try reading the first book in the series. Then, if they like it, let others read it!
Early Chapter Books And Easy Chapter Books
Note: These books are about a hundred pages long and often contain many illustrations. They are perfect for 6-9 year olds, but feel free to enjoy them at any age! They are an excellent follow-up to these early reader chapter books.
Shannon and Dean Hale Princess in Black. I’m the older Shannon Hale from Goose Girl and Princess Academy. Aimed at young readers, this action-packed series has all the wit and clever storytelling of Hale’s other books. (And feel free to get it for your boys…I loved it!)
Dragon Masters by Tracy West. This series is a great introduction to the fantasy genre. It has everything you’d expect… an awesome hero, a castle, a mysterious wizard, and of course dragons! These are the books that really ignited my son’s love of reading. He’s read them all, but occasionally borrows one from the library to read again because he loves them so much.
Kingdom of Renly by Jordan Quinn. Filled with trolls, fairies, dragons, and witches, this is another essential fantasy series for beginners. I love how the boy and girl protagonists (Prince Lucas and his friend Clara) travel throughout their kingdom. These beautiful stories are simple, funny and have a good moral.
Book Series For Children To Encourage Reading For Pleasure
Unicorn Rescue Society by Adam Gidwitz. When the creator of the Grimm, Grimmer, Grimmest podcast (one of our favorite children’s story podcasts) discovered these books, I knew I had to read them! Needless to say, they were not disappointed. Filled with humor, action and lots of information about myths and legends, these books are a lot of fun.
Katrina Charman The Last Firehawk. My sister introduced me to these books after her twin boys went through the entire series and it was a big hit with my kids. The main character, an owl named Tag, and his friend Skyla must try to save Parody from the terrible darkness that terrorizes the land. This is another winner in Scholastic’s supplemental series.
Once by Anna Staniszewski. If you have fairy-tale-loving kids in your house, they’ll love these stories that put twists on some classics. They are part fairy tale, part mystery and part adventure. Not the most engaging series on the list, but definitely a winner for kids who love the fantasy genre.
Asian Citro Joy and Sassafras. I didn’t think you could combine a fantasy novel with teaching the scientific method, but these books do it perfectly! In each book, Zoey (and her cat Sassafras) helps magical creatures by making observations, hypothesizing, experimenting, and analyzing the results. A perfect balance of fun and learning.
Readers To Real Books
You asked Andrea Beatty. Did you know that much-loved characters Iggy Peck the Architect, Ada Twist the Scientist and their friends now have their own chapters?! They have the same whimsical, charming writing style as picture books, but with more complex storylines that help children develop critical thinking and deductive reasoning skills. Perfect for kids interested in STEM or just like to laugh.
The Magic Treehouse by Mary Pope Osborne. These best-selling books are popular and loved for good reason. Two siblings, bookish Jack and adventurous Annie, easily relate in this fun, time-traveling adventure. Best of all, the books are full of facts about different periods and places in history.
I survived Lauren Tarshis. If you have kids who are interested in history or love a good adventure, they’ll love these action-packed stories based on true historical events. Sometimes history can seem far removed from our modern lives, but these books help children really imagine what it was like to live through these important events and learn from them.

Jack Power, H.I. Larry. Jack Power has 24 hours to save the world and walk the dog. The plots of these James Bond-esque spy stories are completely unrealistic, but I guess that’s part of the appeal for kids. They love to imagine themselves as brave and this has led to all sorts of costumes for my boys…which may or may not contain a lot of venom. They are perfect for kids who love science, mystery and adventure.
Chicken Squad by Doreen Cronin. This series of books is perfect for my weird, crazy, always joking and new scheme kids. It’s a funny (and fun) story about four chicks who solve mysteries and fight crime. Written by the author of the best-selling children’s book Click, Clock, Moo (one of my favorites!).
The Doomsday Notebook by Troy Cummings. I was completely sold on the name. I mean really… who doesn’t love reading about a notebook
Beginning Reader Chapter Books For Boys
? (Or I appreciate the drama). This show about a boy named Alexander who finds a notebook full of top-secret information about monsters and then runs off with them is perfect for kids who love to laugh.
The Monster and the Boy by Hannah Barnaby. This book is witty, charming and absolutely hilarious. Here’s the premise: Boy meets monster (under the bed, of course). The boy is screaming. The monster panics and accidentally… well… swallows him. And this was the beginning of their friendship. True! You are guaranteed to enjoy this book
Who will win? By Jerry Pallotta. These books are a little different than the rest of the list, but my boys are totally hooked! These are non-fiction books that set up imaginary battles between different animals and analyze who would win if they met in the wild. It might sound a little scary, but it’s also true, and the books are full of fun facts, charts, and text features to help you develop your informational reading skills.
