I recently shared a Scrivener template to describe the use of Save the Cat! Write a hit novel page and you all loved it. This makes my heart so happy! But hey, I know Scrivener isn’t for everyone, and while Google Docs isn’t as feature-rich as Scrivener, it has a lot of good things.

Book Writing Template Google Docs
It has almost all the sections and information that the Scrivener template does, but formatted to work in Google Docs. And, I mean, I don’t want to toot my own horn, but I think it looks pretty good and works pretty well, especially given the limitations of Google Docs.
Poetry Writing Template
Okay, before I get too far ahead of myself, let’s make sure we all know what saves the cat! Writing a novel is. If you are familiar with the book, go ahead. STC is a writing craft book that presents 15 essential rhythms for novel writing. It tells you what the beats are, examples from popular novels of various genres, and exercises to help you figure out where they fit into your own story.
A walkthrough is just one type of plot guide, but it’s a fairly popular and easy way to start writing novels. As you’ll soon see, this outline template is made to go hand-in-hand with the book, so you’ll want to pick up a copy if you don’t have one if you want to use this template to its fullest.
This template has been updated and included in the Complete Novel Writing Template for Google Docs, a template pack that includes everything you need to plan and write your next novel.
A full page of instructions and tips on how to use this document is included, so you don’t need to go back and refer to this post once you’ve started. On the left side of the screen, you’ll see that headers have been used to have a document outline with a hierarchy, so it’s easy to see which section of the document you’re in and you can easily navigate and jump to different sections .
How To Format A Book Manuscript (inc. Template)
I’ve followed the same color coding as the Scrivener template, with each act a different color to help visually see the progression of the story (visual cues are helpful for me), and each beat has a percent sign and number of page to refer to the description In this book. You can plug in your own notes from there (a note can be a good place to move them once you start filling in scene ideas/sketches for your work in progress).
I also threw in some fun extras like a visual storyboard that links to the outline beats and some prompts for the hero profile.

This guide will take you from a blank page (or blog post) to a finished book, with simple step-by-step instructions and screenshots that show you exactly what to do.

If you’re wondering, “Why use Google Docs when there’s Microsoft Word, Scrivener, etc?” Consider the following benefits of using Google’s cloud-based word processing program:
As you’ll see in the steps below, Google Docs has all the tools you need to create, format, and edit your manuscript. From there, it’s just a matter of downloading it in the form you need for professional editing, interior book design, and publishing.
Take more than just writing a blog post, mainly because it involves a lot more writing and some tricks you may not know yet. We’ll start with a titled outline for your book in a Google Doc (with a numbered list) and go from there.
To insert page breaks, place the cursor where you want the break and go to the “Insert” menu and select “Page Break” and then “Page Break” or press Ctrl + Return.

Continue dividing your outline with page breaks until you have a separate page for each of your chapters and for the title of your book (ie, your title page).
Knowing how to use page breaks will come in handy when it’s time to add other pages to the front and back of the book.
Now that you have the beginnings of your book template, it’s time to define the styles for the book title, chapter headings, and body text.
Start with the Chapter 1 page, select the title, and choose the “Title 1” style from the style menu. Once you apply the H1 style, you can modify the text to make it look exactly how you want.

Next, choose your fonts, font size, and line spacing for the Heading 1 (H1) style, which you’ll use for chapter titles and other page titles in your book.
Once the heading looks the way you want it, select the text and return to the style menu to update Heading 1’s style with your new formatting.
Do the same for each of your subheadings (subtopics), this time applying the Heading 2 or Heading 3 style. Once you’ve set the font, size, and spacing, go back to the style menu and update the ‘heading style chosen.
Choose between left, right, center or justified alignment for body text and headings by selecting the text, go to the top ribbon menu and select the alignment you want.
Choose Your Own Adventure Template
If the chosen alignment is not the default for the body text, you can go to the style menu and update the style for “normal text” (or for the specific title style you want to change).
As for the margins (top, bottom, left, and right), Google Docs sets them to one inch (1″) by default, but you can change this in Page Setup (under the File menu).
If none of the sizes offered are what you have in mind for your book, select the closest one. You can always change the page size (in Word) after downloading your book as a Word document.
Now that your captions are in place and properly formatted (with fonts, sizes, and line spacing), you have writing instructions on every page to get your mind working and the words flowing.

This step will take longer, unless you already have your content ready to copy (eg from your blog posts) and paste into your document.
The first thing you’ll want to do is place your cursor where you want your inline visual to appear. Then go to the “Insert” menu, select “Image” and then “Upload from Computer” if you have the visual saved on your drive, or find your image using an internet search or access Google Drive or Google Photos. You can even use your device’s camera.
Note: Only images tagged for commercial reuse and modification will appear in image search results.
Once you’ve inserted your chosen visuals, you can use the image tools to resize them. The alignment of each visual depends on the cursor position, but you can change it by selecting it and using the alignment tool.
