But writing harmonies that convey the same message as the lyrics and that inspire listeners to take the journey takes conscious effort. Additionally, expanding our natural tendency for harmony to include new chords used in new ways takes time and exploration.

“Great harmonies don’t have to be complicated, and in many situations they’re quite simple.” —Andrea Stolpe Click to tweet

Major harmonies don’t have to be complicated and are quite simple in many situations. When we analyze the harmonic function of our favorite songs, we are sometimes surprised to see that the progression in the verse is also the same in the chorus. Sometimes there’s just one chord in a new part of our song that’s different, and that creates a contrast or a great dynamic build.

Rewriting a new song every day from artists we love gives us blueprints for our own songs. Try using the chords of another artist’s song you like and write your own melody on top. You can rearrange the chords if you find it too difficult to write an original melody. Harmonic sequences are not subject to copyright, and the more transcriptions you make, the more you will find the same sequences used over and over again.

Many songs rely on minor 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th. They are truly the bones of our harmonic writing. When choosing chord colors, we should always be aware of the emotions these chord progressions carry. The personality of the song is always expressed in the harmonic movement. The decision to switch to a new chord, add a borrowed chord, or change chords more or less often can all come from a decision to change or create a mood.

Take some time to describe the feeling you get when you listen to the harmonic progression of your song all by yourself.

Record yourself playing your instrument, with no melody and no lyrics. Notice where you feel the mood change and note which chord is responsible for the mood change. Think less about how clever your chords look or how you like to use chords in more interesting ways to make them look interesting. Instead, think more about how the chords serve your lyrical message and express who you are as an artist.

Other elements to be aware of when writing are the frequency with which you change chords, tempo and key. We often decide on these important parts unconsciously when we write, and thinking about them more consciously can send our songs in a whole new direction. Want to know how to license your music? The site is then searched by clients from all over the world, from TV sound editors to YouTubers, podcasters and video game designers. Maybe they’re looking for something like “energetic EDM upbeat” or “nu-metal mariachi tango.” Basically, sync license sites work much like eBay!

If a customer chooses to purchase your music, these sites will grant them a sync license for your music. Basically, the site receives an upfront fee from the client for the right to use your music in their project. The site takes a commission from this fee, usually between 40-60%, and you get the rest.

If you’re lucky enough to track down your licensee’s TV location, you may also be eligible for backend performance royalties that can run into the thousands of dollars!

Working with music licensing libraries is one of the easiest ways to sell music online. A music library takes care of all the complexities like contracts, payments, taxes, etc. It’s also in their interest to sell your music because they take a share of the revenue.

As I’ll describe in more detail below, license sync is where you work with music licensing sites to try to get your music licensed for TV, radio, podcasts, video games, YouTube videos, etc.

While these types of sales may be less than what you would get from iTunes, I make $10-$20 (or more) every time one of my songs is licensed. And you can still sell your music on iTunes if you want!

The technical term for what we’re talking about here is creating synchronized music. So what is a sync license? Basically, as the owner of your music, you have the right to choose how it is used. Just as a celebrity has the right to be paid for the use of their image to endorse a product, music owners have the right to be paid for the use of their music when it is used in something like a YouTube video.
