To start the monster of a company you’re going to build, you need to make a list of everyone you know. I mean everyone! Family, friends, acquaintances, current co-workers, even your high school graduating class. You should have at least 100 people on this list and don’t try to qualify them too. It doesn’t matter if they have big yards or live in an apartment, everyone on this list can help you in one way or another. If they don’t have a job, they know 100 people who can tell them about you and your business.

Business cards are one of the most important things you can get when starting out. They are very cheap, so you can give them to everyone. Anyone who hears you talk about your new business will probably take the card, too. They may use it to call you or gift a friend, you never know.

Now that you have your list, start making calls and call them all. Give a little detail about yourself and the business and how you’re getting started. Call everyone on the list and if they say no, or you think they won’t, just ask them if they know anyone who needs your services and tell them. Give them your number. After a while, you will get some bites. It only takes one act to get the ball rolling.

Once you have people interested, you need to start booking appointments. You can use software like Google Calendar to keep it organized. You don’t want to miss an appointment because your system is down.

When you go on a date, walk around the house and make a list of all the things you can do for them. Like cutting grass, cutting hedges, borders, gutters etc. Anything you can imagine and do yourself. Then you think how long all this will take you and double it. Then, for your hourly rate when you’re just starting out, you can charge triple what your current job would charge.

So if you think the job will take 8 hours, charge 16. So we get 45*16 = $720. Then what you need to do is create a small contract and charge them half of the bill. Then you have $360 to buy whatever supplies you need to do the job. Things like lawnmowers, brooms or even cheap mowers. I recommend borrowing as much equipment as possible in the beginning as well, this will keep costs down.

That way, at the end of the job, you’ll have the basics you’ll need for other jobs, and a few hundred extra dollars in your pocket.

The best thing about getting your first customer is that you can go to neighbors’ houses and knock on their doors. You’ll get a much better response from people when you say I’m Joe from Joe’s Landscaping and I take care of your neighbor Bob’s property. If you like, I can mow the lawn and trim the hedges while I’m out here. Then just write a quote on the back of one of your handy business cards and say I’ll be here most of the day if you’re interested, just let me know. It will take more work than you think, especially if you are offering a total property care package. If they agree, you can ask them for another deposit and BOOM! A few hundred dollars more in your pocket.

With the ball rolling like this, it’s time to get social media buzzing. You want your business to be visible where people spend their time. This means you will definitely want to create a Facebook business page and start posting on it. You can post photos of yourself working in people’s yards and you can also post your services. You should also post on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. These sites are free and people will definitely visit you.

After you’ve hit every social media platform you can think of and started posting, you should also create business listings on sites like Google Business and Yelp. You can then ask your clients to review you after doing a great job on their property. Lots of people check reviews of local businesses on these platforms, so it pays to create those reviews.

Finally, you need to create a website. It may seem scary at first, but it’s easier than you think. There are many platforms that are very simple and easy to use. They are also quite affordable. In addition, a website makes your business official and gives you a central place to put all your content, run your social media channels, and post your services and rates. Your website link should also be included on your business card once you get one.

The last step is the most difficult. Just grind every day. You will never outgrow your mindset. So if you think you can do it, you can do it. You just have to keep trying as hard as you can.

Keep looking for work. Keep calling people and making appointments, and then when they accept your services, break their expectations. The better you do, the more likely they are to recommend you to their friends. Then, once you start making some money, take what you need to pay your bills, but put the rest back into your business. Save to hire better equipment or workers. Then it’s just a matter of rinsing and repeating the process. As long as you love your practice, it will be successful.
