Start Your Own Etsy Business – I started an Etsy store in the summer of 2015. It was a struggle! I didn’t get my first sale until December. I was very happy, but that seemed to be the end. My next sale isn’t until spring 2016 after spending the entire spring renovating my shop. If only I had started stronger, I would have sold sooner. The past two years have been an adventure trying to figure out how to be successful with my Etsy store. The advice I wish I had received from others from the beginning is that you get what you give. If you put little time or effort into your business, it won’t grow and you won’t make sales. When I started using the following tips, my store started to grow and I was very satisfied.
The first thing you need to do is know the population you want to target with your product. I spent a lot of time looking at other stores and seeing not only what they sell, but how they display their products. My goal is to create products that are popular but affordable. I will look at the best selling item on etsy and see if I can make it and sell it at a lower price. That’s when I hit my first “hot me”. To this day, my elastic hair card is my best selling item on Etsy. They are very popular for a bachelorette party and very popular on Etsy. I create this product, add my own twist (something I think is missing from the market) and sell it at a competitive price.

This is fun! Create a good looking store banner and logo. I use Canva! A banner on your Etsy shop is also a great way to easily promote your seasonal promotions. It’s the first thing people see when they walk into your Etsy store. Also, I feel that creating a business card is important for my shop. I ship my consignments and sell them at craft fairs (just craft fairs are another great place to sell your stuff!

The best way to promote your store is through social media. I use Instagram a lot. I think Instagram is the perfect platform to share your products. Another good thing about Instagram is the community of creators there. I like to follow similar stores and participate in monthly contests. There are also some interesting Instagram accounts with a large following that just promote Etsy shops, some of which have a small promotion fee, but I have found some that are reasonably priced!
Start strong with the right products. More products listed in your store will allow you to sell more. I recommend you list about 20 items to start with, which may seem like a lot at first, but the more names you have, the more you will appear on the search page (including your sales … sales + money on the item listed = be listed near first search pages). In addition, there are items that are already designed and ready for fast shipping, and Etsy customers prefer fast shipping.
My mailing essentials: Padded shipping envelopes, cute tissue paper, business cards and/or thank you notes. I like my delivery to represent what my store will be like, I want people to be happy when they open my products. I think about each gift package for the customer, so that each package is beautiful and special when it arrives. Before I had a business card, I would include a thank you note, and I would also include a special thank you note if I made a connection with a customer. I’ve worked with a customer several times to create a product, so I’ve included a thank you note because I’m really grateful to work with them and trust me to create products for them.
A picture never says a thousand words. It is important to be as detailed as possible with your entry. Such size, color and other products will please customers and review well! To get some ideas, go to etsy and in their search engine type in your products, for example “Hair Bows” without hitting enter before looking at the instructions that first appear below… it will say: “Girls Hair Bows” or “Hair. bows for girls” etc. These appear because they are the most requested.
