Short Stories For Readers Theater – How can you improve students’ reading skills? Theater for students! It doesn’t matter how you call the theater (theatre or theatre). It doesn’t matter where you put the apostrophe (student’s or student’s). In fact, you may not have used it as an apostrophe at all (readers). But regardless, Reader’s Theater is a fun way for students to practice the four elements of reading fluency:

I call this “ARPE” for short. Of course, that’s because it’s so much fun to say, “We’re gonna rock ARPE!” Instead of saying, “Class, today we’re going to work on our accuracy, reading level, sentences, and speech.”

However, part of the beauty of Reader’s Theater is that it doesn’t require readers to memorize or act — the “characters” just emerge from their clear reading. Likewise, no costumes, props, or sets are required to perform student theater (although students may choose to include some of these elements for fun).

Student theater can be incorporated into the English Language Arts (ELA) curriculum to support a variety of learning outcomes. Here’s a helpful guide for third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade Common Core State Standards (CCSS) reading theater can help students achieve:

By the end of the year, read and understand literature, including stories, plays, and poems, by the end of the 2-3rd grade band of complex texts independently and creatively.

Report on a topic or text, tell a story, or retell an experience with relevant facts and relevant and descriptive details, clearly at speaking speed.

Create interesting audio recordings of stories or poems that demonstrate fluid reading at a comprehensible pace; Include visual displays when appropriate to emphasize or enhance certain facts or details.

After finishing the script they will write an extra scene, and write a ‘voice’ to introduce their story. There’s also a quick puzzle about missing objects to solve!

Taking It To The Stage With Readers Theater

Based on a children’s story. In this 21st century version, young Cindy lives in an unhappy household that is obsessed with cleanliness. In this retelling of the classic story, however, shoe-obsessed Cindy (she’s forever shopping for shoes on Amazon) is the villain! Only her father knows about her sister’s unhappiness and the jealousy that led to Sindi’s bad behavior. Cindy goes to the ball and meets Hans Simm, lead singer of the best-selling band the Charmers, but the story ends differently than your readers might expect. The text is intended for 9 students, but the number of students can be easily adjusted or increased, depending on how many groups you want to have.

Articles will keep your readers engaged; They have to discuss and write five questions, do a text writing activity, write a rich story theme and do a fun prank activity. Oh!

This funny and interesting story revolves around a claim that the house is haunted. A boy tries to pull off a scam to raise money for trendy basketball shoes. Only the cooperation of 12-year-old twins (sister and brother) can solve the four clues to reveal the system. Your students will enjoy testing their wits against these characters!

Students must discuss and write about six topics, complete the writing, and create a ‘spot the difference’ diagram for another student. The resource ends with a two-page horror comic.
