Route 66 Start And End

Route 66 Start And End – Fun place to take a photo and start your Route 66 adventure. There is one on the right side of the road and another on the other corner on the left 👀 If you go around the block you will also see the last Route 66 sign because the streets are one way, it just fits. The signs are easily seen from your car. I didn’t go out either. Took my photos to check that box and continued my journey to my next Route 66 stop. 👍🏻 The sign is plastered with stickers applied by road trip enthusiasts from various locations along historic Route 66. The place is usually visited by discerning travelers, you feel a good feeling being there, so amazing and indescribable. Without a doubt, if you visit downtown Chicago, taking a photo is an absolute must. Absolutely recommended. 😍 #wheretogo #bestplace #bestview #awesomepic #mytripvlog #celebratewithtrip #best_trip_by_trip #bestplace #recommended #besttimeever #bestdeal #awesometrip #tripcom

Best Road Trip Destinations: Chicago To St. Louis On The Iconic Route 66

Route 66 is the ultimate embodiment of the road and all its great promises: freedom and serendipity, kitsch and living history, and a case study in the way Americans have migrated and multiplied. You can certainly travel east on Route 66 (in fact, we recommend it), but there’s no denying the symbolic power of at least one journey west along the patchwork of asphalt.

Our brand new Route 66 book will help you find all the classic, quirky and fun stops along the Mother Road.

Ready to start? Don’t leave home without your trusty Route 66 map. It’s a good idea to bring a paper map of Route 66 as a backup if you don’t have cell phone reception. But the trip planner is going to be your trip’s best friend, with maps and guides ready to make your trip a success.

Here are some of our favorite attractions on Route 66. Make sure you don’t miss them on your next trip down the Mother Road.

Route 66 Bucket List Experiences: Things To Do On Route 66

Gateway Arch National Park is much more than just the iconic arch. There’s a free museum detailing the construction of America’s Westward Expansion and Gateway Arch, which is a good place to start if you’re looking forward to a trip to the top (or if you’re afraid of heights but still want the Arch experience). A trip to the top of the Eero Saarinen-designed monument – the tallest arch in the world and the tallest man-made monument in the United States – offers magnificent views of both sides of the Mississippi.

Carthusian Blue Whale is one of the most popular attractions along Route 66. It was built by Hugh Davies in the early 1970s as a surprise anniversary gift for his wife Zelta, who loved whaling and collected whale figurines. Take time to wander around the remnants of this famous roadside wonder and grab a bite to eat at one of the picnic tables.

Ten Cadillacs line Interstate 40, buried in the dirt at the same corner as the Great Pyramid of Geezer. Visitors are encouraged to bring a can of spray paint and put their own stamp on this unique roadside art installation. Spray painting Cadillacs is a rite of passage for any true road tripper, and the installation has gone through quite a few changes over the years.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a more real—or alive—ghost town than Oatman. Located on the edge of Arizona at 66 and 2,700 feet above sea level in the Black Mountains, Oatman is a quaint place run by wild burros.

California Route 66: The End Of The Road

Whether you call it the start or end point of the Mother Road, the Santa Monica Pier is the perfect place to stretch your legs or take ocean photos before starting the 2,000-mile trek east. Sure it’s touristy, but that won’t stop you from taking a ride on the 1922 carousel or grabbing something sweet from the soda fountain. From roller coasters and ferris wheels to arches and signs that mark the official end of Route 66, there’s plenty of fun to be had.

Although it only existed as a single, legally codified road for 59 years—between 1926 and 1985—Route 66 has become one of the great symbolic routes of human civilization. It will live forever as a route whose traffic reshaped the world of its time, leading generations of adventurers, migrants, grifters and visionaries to unimaginable possibilities.

Route 66 spawned new cities, new industries, and a new vernacular architecture. Much of this was lost when most interstate travel moved interstate, but today is a thriving community
