Question: What options do I have as a nurse if I do not want to open my own practice?

An NP has several career options, many of which are unrelated to entrepreneurship. Read more about options to open your own reception.

Many nurse practitioners (NPs) decide to open their own practices. Depending on their state, they act as primary service providers with either limited or full authority. However, an NP has many career options, many of which do not involve entrepreneurship.

MaShelia Broadway, MSN, NP-BC, APRN, an acute care NP, chose not to open her own practice. At first, he had trouble finding work in his first specialty, gerontology.

“Everyone I interviewed wanted someone who could see all adults, not just geriatrics,” she says. Already practicing as an RN at a hospital, Broadway decided to stay in the ER because she simply enjoyed caring for patients in that setting.

He tackles the challenges of opening an office. Taking a different route can be beneficial because “…you can just practice without worrying about ‘running the business’. There’s no customer base to build.”

NPs have multiple career paths in both inpatient and outpatient settings. NPs can perform clinical, academic, and administrative roles at any degree level. Here are eight options for opening your own practice:

Many NPs work alongside physicians and other health care professionals in emergency and critical care settings. They can specialize in internal medicine as NP nurses or practice as medical specialists.

Working in this position can contribute to a better balance between work and family life. “I’m done until the next shift. I don’t take my work home with me. There are no midnight calls or calls to different hospitals,” says Broadway.

The pace of work in outpatient departments is often slower than in hospitals and sub-acute care facilities. NPs can serve as physicians in specialty clinics along with other health care professionals. Working in an outpatient setting can give you the feeling of having your own practice, but without the responsibility.

It’s also important to note that you may have to take a pay cut, especially if you currently work in an emergency room. Broadway remembers when she began her job search as an NP. “The geriatrics offices weren’t offering wages that were comparable to [my] RN wages,” she says.

Occupational health centers offer treatment to the organization’s employees. They can perform health checks, perform physical exams, prescribe treatments and administer vaccines. NPs in this role must be familiar with workers’ compensation law because they may care for workers who are injured on the job.

What Is A Nurse Practitioner? Your Career Guide

If you want to see the same patients regularly without opening an office, home care can be an option. Specialties include respite care for children, geriatrics, wound care and hospice/palliative care.

For example, geriatricians may make home visits to residents of nursing homes or skilled nursing facilities. The job includes the implementation of preventive care, treatment planning and patient education.

Nursing schools are in dire need of teachers. NPs can serve as clinical instructors, lecturers, and visiting professors for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Your graduate education and clinical experience qualify you to teach, and many entry-level positions require little or no teaching or teaching experience.

NPs can serve local communities by performing screening and other care services through a mobile clinic. Many mobile health centers serve patients from a van or RV, which you can find on the Mobile Health Map app, the largest mobile health center database in the United States.

You can also get trucker physicals at truck stops through companies like UrgentCareTravel or health screenings through programs like the New Mexico Mobile Screening Program.

Health coaches provide support and guidance to help patients achieve their health goals. They help patients identify barriers to optimal health and act as accountable partners. As a health coach, you can work in several specialties (such as diabetes education).

Detention centers handle the care of inmates in prisons (ie prisons, group homes, and juvenile detention centers). The projects may include health checks, training and making treatment plans. Working in this environment has its challenges and is not for everyone.

“I wouldn’t be able to do repairs because I can’t handle it,” says Broadway. “The people who work there probably enjoy it.” The NP must consider their own safety and comfort needs.

Although this is a short list, there are many opportunities for NPs that do not involve opening a practice. “You can also work in pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, nursing homes, politics or in a doctor’s office,” says Broadway. “The possibilities are endless…”.

MaShelia has worked as a registered nurse for 20 years. In 2003, he received his BSN from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). As an RN, she has worked in the ICU and PACU. In 2011, she received her MSN from UAMS specializing in Geriatric Nursing. Eventually, he returned to graduate school to specialize in emergency care. As an NP, she practiced both ambulatory and physical medicine before eventually settling into a hospitalist role.
