A common book formatting practice is to use double line spacing and 0.5 inch indents for the first line of paragraphs. You can install these
Choose a clean, easy-to-read font for your text. For most books, a font size of 11 or 12 works well.
Each chapter should start on a new page. Use the “Topic 1” style for chapter headings and “Topic 2” for headings. This allows you to easily create a table of contents later.

Front page contains title page, copyright page, dedication, acknowledgments and table of contents. Be sure to follow the usual page order in previous issues.
Once you’ve formatted your book, save it as a PDF. This ensures that your formatting remains the same when you upload your file to KDP or IngramSpark.

I set this to 1 inch at the top and bottom margins (slightly more at the top). “Guys” is an extra space inside. Recently (2014) I’ve noticed that the Createspace book spines are very compact, so the chute may need to be a little bigger. Copy and paste your text into the document (or, if you’ve written in Word, save the document as a new file (just in case) and start formatting.
Select some text and click the “line options” tab. Set the first line indent in the paragraphs to .2 or higher (I started with .3, but it’s too much).
Make sure there is no space before or after the paragraph and that the text is justified. Select the font you want to use. With that text still selected, right-click, go to “Styles” and “Edit General to Match Selection.” Now the whole document uses “Normal style”.
Then select the first paragraph of your book, click the line break options again, but set the first line indent to 0.0. In this case, right-click and “Save selection as new style.” Save it as “First Episode”.

Next we will divide all the chapters. This will be really important later when we start adding headers and footers. So place the cursor before any text, go to “Page Layout” >> “Breaks” and “Next Page.”
If you’ve done this correctly, it will say “First Page Footer, Section 1” on the first page and “First Page Header, Section 2” at the top of the next page.
Click on the header area (by clicking on the space at the top of the page) and make sure you select “Unique First Page” and “Unique Odd and Even Pages.”
Since this is the first page of the first chapter, you can start styling the chapter pages. To use Word’s built-in table of contents feature, it’s best to start with Word’s default “First Heading.”

Just type “Chapter One”, select it, select “Heading 1” from styles, then change the size and font, select the text and right click, then under “styles” click “Update Heading One to match selection.” (I changed the font to no indent, black, and “Bebas Neue.”) You may want to expand the text by bringing up the font menu (Ctrl+D on Windows) to advanced, space, and “expand.”
You should also check that there is no digression on the topic of your chapter, so that it is truly focused.
If you have the “Navigation” window open on the left, this topic should appear immediately.
Now you might want to style the first sentence. Select the first few words and change them to upper case by going to the “Change case” button in the home menu.

Then, to add a Dropcap, place the cursor before the first letter of the first sentence, then go to the Insert panel and click the DropCap feature.
You can change the cap font to make it stand out even more, but finding the right position can be difficult. If you want the Dropcap to span two lines instead of three, select “Drop Cap Options” from the menu.
Now that our first page is done, scroll down to the second page and click at the top to select a header. At the top of the menu, “Link to the Past” is probably selected. You want to click it to remove it from the link (only on the first few pages, so it doesn’t link to the previous issue. On the remaining pages, you want a link to the previous selection). I will type “Book Title”, adjust the style and save it as a new Quick Style (“titles”).
I will adapt properly. If you have a “gutter” set, you can see that the “inside” of the page (on the left side) is a lot of space. You want to align your headers and footers to the outside, so make sure they are on the side of the page with small margins.

. This goes in the page number field. Mine starts on page 3. If I want to change this I can go to
Then I can go down to the next page. Since I chose “Different odd and even pages,” I can make this page a little different by aligning it to the left and writing “Author’s Name.”
Then, instead of entering the page number again, I can just select and copy the page number field from the previous page and paste it into the footer of this page – left aligned as a header. To check my work, I go to “View” and hit “Two Pages” to make sure it looks OK.
There is very little space between my headers and content… but that’s because I set my top margins to 1” (very small). I’ll leave it for now. The titles and page numbers look fine, so I go back to View >> 100% and continue. The entire first chapter should look pretty good now.

If I want to format a paragraph break I can… the easiest way is to use the “First paragraph” style with capital letters for the first few words, but no letters.
When I get to the bottom of the chapter, I put the cursor under the text, select
Since this is the first page of a new chapter, and we chose “Unique First Page”, this page should be blank, with no header or footer, so you can style it as the first chapter page. With the Word, it is difficult to get everything together well.
The best way to get it to fit 100% is to select and copy from just above the first paragraph to the top of the page, including all spaces and the chapter header, and paste the first page into the next chapter. It’s also much faster than recreating everything by hand. After that, I can just change the text to “Chapter Two”.

Subsequent pages in the book should have the same footnotes and the page numbers should be automatic. So all you have to do is skip and add the “Next Page” sections between each chapter and create chapter pages. If your page numbers are not working for some reason, make sure the “Link to Previous” option is selected. If they are not connected, go to
