I searched for the perfect costume for my little one but couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I made my own. I’m going to show you how to make a DIY Jessie no-sew Halloween costume anytime!

When my son told me he wanted to be Woody for Halloween, I knew his little sister would just need a matching Toy Story Jessie costume. I partnered with JCPenney for all of our Halloween needs and was able to find the basics for all of our Halloween costumes at amazing prices.

As we walked through JCPenney, my son saw this Disney Toy Story Dress Up Woody Costume and begged for it. He’s a big Toy Story fan, so I said yes. I was also able to find official Disney Toy Story boots and a matching Woody hat on JCPenney.com. Since all of these items are officially licensed by Disney, they are great quality, and since I bought them at JCPenny, the price was right! I bought his 5 piece suit (with vest, badge and scarf) for only $23. The Disney Toy Story II Cowboy Boots were only $45 (much cheaper than the competition) and I bought the hat for only $22.99. The hat is probably my favorite part. Unlike the cheap cowboy hats we’ve had in the past, this hat is very well made and well made. I know it will last for many years of play.

JCPenney has a variety of Toy Story costumes for the whole family, but I wasn’t sure if our 2-year-old would fill out the little Jessie costume that was available online. After looking at toddler clothes, I decided it would be so fun to make a Toy Story Jessie costume for her with everyday clothes and a few things from the craft store.

I bought a pair of size 2T Okie Dokie jeggings and an Okie Dokie long sleeve t-shirt for $2.49 each during the sale. I mean, how can you beat these price points?! I found an adorable pair of Okie Dokie Moselle Girls’ Cowboy Boots for just $13.49 after sales and coupons. At the craft store, I bought ½ yard of burlap (which was $2.65, and I could actually get ¼ yard), an endless roll of double-sided tape and a stick. glue and red and yellow felt. I had also bought a piece of brown in case I wanted to make a belt, but decided against it later as I found the belt in his older brother’s closet.

Since I didn’t want to sew this costume, I bought a roll of double sided tape to make “chaps” and attach to the jeggings, and attach the yellow details to the shirt. I started by making chaps. I simply lay the jeggings on the fabric and cut around, leaving a ½ inch “seam” allowance that I will wrap using tape to create a neat hem.

This tape works wonders! It’s easy to use and really sticky. After folding and “folding” the four sides, I made a piece on the other side.

I attached the chaps look fabric to the jeggings using the same tape. When you attach each leg of the chaps to the front of the jeggings, make sure you leave about 4-5 inches of space at the bottom to cover the boots and have a swing effect.

Once you’ve left about 4 inches of space at the bottom, simply attach the legging-like fabric to the front of the pants.

When the pants were finished, I started up. It helps to have a picture of Jessie from Toy Story nearby to create the same effect. I took a piece of yellow felt and put it on the shirt and decided how long I wanted it to last. Since the shirt I bought had a small pocket and lace detail, I knew I wanted a statement piece to cover that up. I took a pencil and sketched out the design of Jessie’s shirt, then cut it out.

After making the rough cut, I took a red permanent marker, traced the outline, and drew a freehand design on the felt. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect just because it’s a little kid’s Halloween costume. After I made this part, I cut the felt to cover the shoulders and the neckline in the front.

I did the same back. You will need to do this in two separate parts; one for the front and one for the back, glue them to meet at the shoulder seam. Otherwise, your child will not be able to put the shirt on because the sensor does not stretch.

I then finished by adding a little felt to the bottom of the sleeves to make a false cuff. Again, I just drew the pattern freehand and attached the felt with permanent double sided tape.

You can use it in one piece, as they should be able to put their hand in the hole if the feeling is not too strong. After confirming the feel, I cut off the excess on the side to make a small point like the actual cuff.

I added a small fabric belt that I found in the closet and attached because it was a little big. I knew he had trouble latching on, so this seemed like the best thing to do. I also got her an official Toy Story Jessie hat from JCPenney.com and it’s perfect!

I have to say I love how their clothes turned out and the fact that I was able to find everything I needed at JCPenney with a quick trip to the craft store. Their clothes were affordable and very high quality. I know these costumes, especially the boots and hats, will get a lot of use after Halloween is over.
