Interesting Ways To Start A Story – The most important thing about writing is finding a good idea. You have to have a great idea to write a story. You need to be able to see the whole picture before you can start writing it. Sometimes you may need help with this. Story starters are a great way to start the story. You can use them to start a story, start a character in a story, or even start a scene in a story.

When you start writing a story, you have to have a hook. A hook can be a character or a plot device. It can also be a setting, something like “A young man entered a bar with a horse”. or a setting like “It was the summer of 1969 and there were no cell phones.” The first sentence of a story is often the hook. It can also be a premise or situation, such as: “A strange old man in a black cloak was standing on the train platform.”

Teaching students to write good narrative is an ongoing process. Begin by teaching character traits, point of view/point of view, setting, theme, plot development, etc. Students need a basic understanding of the elements of a story before they start writing. I’ve created a series of blog posts covering these topics. Links to these posts are at the bottom of the page.

Once students understand the elements of a story, they can begin to write a good story. This post is an overview of ten things to remember when writing a narrative. You will find links scattered throughout this article that go to posts that do not contain specific details.

FIRST TIP ~~ Ask students to write their rough drafts on the fronts of the pages only. This makes editing much easier as pages can be split into two or more pieces. The pieces are then taped back onto another sheet of paper with spaces in between for students to write additional descriptions, details, etc. in the extra space.

Make sure your story has paragraphs. They tell when you change the time, place, topic or speakers. They help break up the page, so it’s not just a solid writing block.

Show the reader that you have a high-quality, first-class, superior, excellent, exceptional, great, amazing, incomparable vocabulary by using 5th grade vocabulary words.

The Show, Don’t Tell method of writing is when the author is able to create a picture in the reader’s mind. This type of writing avoids repeating empty words like go, big or say.

Make sure you change your sentences. Some should be short while others are long. Make sure the sentences start using different parts of speech.

How To Start A College Essay: 9 Effective Techniques

Have you ever wondered what it would be like for students to have dozens of resources at their fingertips? This is what I did. Two file folders have been pasted together. When they stand up, they make a perfect studio. Students created collapsible organizers and doodle notes to stick on both sides of the gallery. So when a student couldn’t remember a rule about how to write quotes or needed a wow word for a narrative, he was there.

This proofreading “trick” won’t catch all types of mistakes, but it really helps students focus on a few common mistakes that students often make in narrative writing.

Ask students to highlight the first word in each sentence of their narrative. This makes it much easier for students to identify the following errors or areas in the story where improvements can be made. Once the first words have been highlighted, ask students to look for the following:

Note: A common mistake students make is to start a third point of view narrative and then switch to first point of view. Ask students to check that the characters’ names do not change from ‘Jack and Jill’ to ‘I’.

Count the first words used. Follow the “Three Strikes Rule, You’re Out”. This means that if three or more sentences start with the same word, you will need to rewrite one or more of those sentences.

An easy way to correct this mistake is to split the story into parts. Cross out the sentences that start with the same word. Type several lines from a clean piece of notebook paper. Ask students to rewrite the ‘missing’ sentences using complex sentences.

Do the sentences vary in length? Are some short and some long? Does the story contain many short sentences?

Note: Again, use the “Sentence Cutting Method” so that the blank paper can add creative space(s) for students to write new sentences.

Are there really l-o-n-g sentences in the story? This is often a sign of run-on sentences or a failure to add end marks. Check to see if you’ve joined a series of independent clauses with coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS). While there are many great ways for students to write narrative hooks, many students need to learn patterns that they can follow. With elementary students, I like to cover five methods of writing a hook.

As a guide, have students create cards that describe the five methods of writing narrative hooks. Printables for this activity are included in the pdf file.

These five story hooks are different beginnings of the same story. They illustrate five different ways to start a story. Read each one and discuss.

The sun was warm on my back as I ran to the waiting yellow school bus. As I nestled into the worn leather chair, I was greeted by the friendly voices of other excited children. The look on my face was one of confidence and satisfaction. With a jerk, the bus rumbled down the road and I was headed for one of the worst days of my life.
