For those planning a clothing line from scratch, this is the point where you decide what type of business you want to run. This will help you determine how much time, effort and funding you will need.

Once you have a small business idea for your clothing line, you’ll be able to fund it yourself and start it up as you go. Designing and sewing custom clothing yourself means you don’t have to carry tons of inventory. However, to be profitable you will need to invest in equipment and large quantities of fabric upfront. Other costs include shipping materials, fees for launching your website, and marketing budget.

If you’re going to go all out and partner with manufacturers on a production run, you’ll have to incur high upfront costs to meet minimums. A solid business plan and costing exercise will help you determine how much funding you need.

In either case, expect to need several thousand dollars up front. “In fashion, you spend more than just fabric, buttons and labour,” says Sarah. “It costs you shipping, it costs you heat and rent.”

“I’ve always had a good attitude,” Sarah says. “But it’s all about transformation.” Sarah has worked on plus-size collections during her time in the corporate world and said transforming trends means considering the needs of plus-size customers too.

Even though she maintains her strengths, Sara impacts her growth in fashion and what happens in the world around her. “Take the athletes,” she says. “I don’t do tights, I don’t do sports bras, but this cool fabric crop top would look amazing with tights, so this is how I incorporate the trend.”

By maintaining tight production and control of the design, Sara was able to quickly pivot after the global pandemic, adding masks to her signature prints. She sold 1,100 masks in two months and turned those sales into repeat customers.
