How To Start Summary Paragraph – Are you one of the many teachers who struggle with teaching summaries? Summarizing can be a difficult skill for students to master. It requires strong reading comprehension because students must be able to find the main idea and supporting details.
Summary writing is a very important skill. Students need to be able to understand a summary to be able to write longer essays and present arguments in high school and college. Summarizing is a level 2 skill in terms of depth of knowledge, and being able to do it well will prepare students for a higher level of knowledge and success.

How To Start Summary Paragraph
To start teaching by summarizing, I like to review what is and is NOT a summary. Next we will read a short passage and two examples. One is a good example of a summary and the other is not.
How To Write A Book Summary (step By Step)
Then I use two techniques to teach summary: paragraph and question shortening, quotation, summary. (Both methods are included in my Graphic Organizers for Reading Comprehension bundle, which contains 30 graphic organizers to help students in ALL content areas.)
The first strategy, “Question, quote, summary” has three steps. First, students write after reading the question that interests them. This is useful for reflecting and expanding on what they read. Students will then write an important quote from the text. This will help them clarify the main idea. Finally, they will write a brief summary.
When applicable, I like to add a Sketch to this strategy. This is a great way for visual learners to express themselves and understand text.
The second strategy, Paragraph Reduction, also has three steps. First, students answer the question “Who or what is the text about?” This makes them focus on the topic of the passage. Then they will answer the question: which is more important, who or what does it? This helps them identify the key activities being carried out. Finally, they will use this information to write a brief summary.

Summaries must be written in your own words and not with direct quotes from the text. They should contain only the main ideas and important supporting ideas. They should not include their opinion or any information that is not written in the text. Summaries should be shorter than the text.
When students are struggling and don’t know where to start, ask them to look for key words and words that are repeated. I love using the free Word Clouds web app. With this program, students can copy and paste text and immediately see a preview of the most frequently encountered words.
