As the youngest of four girls, I always looked up to my sisters and wanted to follow in their footsteps. They always told me I couldn’t do this or that; it is impossible. Eventually, as time went on, I began to believe it more and more. That being said, I just did the bare minimum to get by. For example, I did very well in school, but I didn’t think twice about enhancing my experience by participating and participating in extracurricular activities; I lacked the motivation and confidence to succeed. After graduating high school in May 2010, I started working at a chain called Wich Superior Sandwiches in Cummings, Georgia. I knew I wanted to go to college as well as what I wanted to study, but I never thought I could afford it, so I put it on the back burner and started pursuing another goal. My next goal wasn’t easy either. I wanted to buy a car. I knew as I watched my older sister struggle car after car that I wanted to be able to pay off the entire car the day I bought it. I knew it would save me a lot of money, but I also knew it would bring me one step closer to freedom. This thought drove me day by day.
My fate came after a day of working endless eight-hour, sometimes 10-hour shifts for five long months. I woke up early in the morning and knew what tasks I wanted to accomplish that day. It was a cold day on December 23, 2010. My mom and I got into the car, my credit card in hand. I was nervous but excited. We headed out to see my uncle so he could do a final inspection on the car before buying more. After meeting my uncle, we had to make one last stop; bank. I took out the money needed to buy a new car and we were on our way. We were talking, listening to music, but it took us twenty-five minutes to get to where we were going, it seemed like an hour. The three of us went into the front office to advise the salesperson. After explaining that I wanted to buy a Chevy Cavalier, he pulled up in front and proceeded to take out the paperwork. When it was all over, I went outside to take one last look at my new car before handing over the money. When I finished, I looked at my mom and knew it was time. I was afraid to count the gentleman’s money; A hundred, two hundred… a thousand and so on until I had all my money. He thanked me and gave me two sets of keys. I couldn’t wait to drive my new car. I happily opened the door with a big smile on my face and sat behind the wheel. He put the key in the ignition and carefully turned it, starting with a good roar. Nothing makes me happier than knowing that I did it all by myself. This car was mine; In my name only, myself and my insurance paid 100%.
Looking back now, I realize that it doesn’t matter what others tell me I can or can’t do, it just depends on what I believe in myself. After buying a car, I realized that I can do everything I want in life; All I need is the drive and courage to follow through. Although I’m still struggling with confidence, I remind myself that if I continue to push myself hard and everyday, then the goals I can set for myself are limitless. All I have to do to achieve these goals is to believe in my heart that I will and I will not let anyone stop me.
I am lucky. In the bottom of my heart, luck is indisputable, because I loved her from the beginning. And I didn’t just love it, I supported it.

Both my parents were born in South India in very conservative families. My grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, second cousins, and the dog next door were all very religious, traditional, homophobic, and totally cliche. Now, science may say that parents pass on many traits to their children, but my parents are living proof that not all children inherit their parents’ traits. I mean, my parents are nothing like my grandparents. In fact, it is quite different.
After my parents and I moved from India to America, it was difficult for me to adapt to the environment. Even after starting school, I always felt something special, which gave some time, affected my studies. I started to hate studying and going to school. I lost my parents more times than I care to admit when I was little. Despite not getting the grades they wanted if I didn’t work as hard as I should or lying about working when I didn’t, my parents had faith in me from a young age.
Now, unlike my parents, when we sometimes went to India to visit my cousins, I saw how they were sexually and physically abused by their parents just because they forgot to do chores or they weren’t the smartest in the class. I’m not saying that aunts and uncles are horrible people who don’t deserve to raise children. I’m just saying that their parenting style is primitive and incompetent. After all, the most important thing a parent can do is love, encourage, support and guide their children to be the best they can be. Unfortunately, this is not a common concept in India.
I was amazed at the complete and utter separation between my parents and my cousins’ parents. My aunt and uncle were cruel and impatient, while my parents were compassionate and understanding. At that moment I realized that I was really lucky. After that year, I really got myself together and started working at the school. Not only did I complete the assignment given by the teacher, but I also completed the extra questions and passed a 5th grader, which was great. Before I knew it, I wanted to learn again and was hungry for more. I came to school every day eager to learn and left every day completely satisfied.
