Is Jump Starting Bad For Your Battery? Learn How To Do It Right
Few things ruin a day like a dead car battery. But the day is not yet lost. Access to jumper cables and another running vehicle is all you need to get back on the road. And if another running vehicle is not available, you can also use a portable starter motor. All you have to do is follow these simple instructions.
It is a good idea to always carry a jumper cable in the vehicle, as well as a first aid kit, flashlight, extra jacket and other emergency supplies. Better to have them and never need them than to need them and be without.
They are usually under the hood, but may be in the trunk or elsewhere – check your owner’s manual.
Park close enough to allow the jump leads to reach between both vehicle batteries. Make sure the ignition keys of both vehicles are turned off.
How To Jump Start Your Car
Attach one of the positive (red) clamps of the jumper cable to the positive terminal of the empty battery (marked with a “+” sign – it is often covered by a red cap).
Return to the dead car, attach the black clamp to the unpainted piece of metal at the end under the hood at least a foot from the dead battery. (See Keep yourself safe below.)
Run it at 1500 rpm for at least a few minutes. After a few minutes the continuous battery should have enough charge to start the inoperable car.
At least it should spin. If it does not start after a few cranks, go back to step 5. If the vehicle starts, disconnect the cables in the reverse order they were attached. Then drive the vehicle with the previously dead battery for about half an hour to charge it before turning off the engine.

So you turn on the ignition, and instead of your car firing up and getting excited to take you to your next destination, all it does is make a quick click, or maybe no sound at all. It looks like the battery is dead.
If you have a set of jumper cables in your trunk and another (work) car nearby, you can be back on the road in less than 10 minutes – even less if you have one of those portable starter vehicles with you.

With the drive vehicle turned off, begin the wiring process by attaching the red cable clamp to the positive terminal of your dead car. As long as any part of the jumper cables is connected to a power source,
Go to a working vehicle and connect the other red clamp to the positive terminal of that battery. Once there, go ahead and attach the black clamp to the negative terminal. Return to the disabled vehicle and complete the circuit by attaching the black clamp from this side to the unpainted piece of metal under the hood, preferably over a foot from the dead battery.

Don’t Complete the circuit by attaching a black clamp to the negative terminal of the dead battery. Doing so is a recipe for an explosion.

After making all four connections to the three terminals and one ground point, start the engine of a serviceable vehicle and lightly depress the accelerator pedal to bring the engine speed up to about 1500 rpm. In this way, the charger of the running vehicle can support the charging process.
After a running vehicle has charged the other vehicle’s dead battery for a few minutes, try starting the vehicle with a dead battery. If your dead car catches fire again, you might want to shout, “It’s alive!” With these repeats out of the way, you can now start disconnecting the connectors in the reverse order you connected them.

5. Now go back and firmly attach the last remaining black clamp to the negative terminal of the flat/discharged battery; again be careful not to touch this bracket and is the vehicle body! You should now see sparks from where the red and black brackets meet the corresponding points – this means everything is connected correctly and ready to start the series…
6. First start the engine in the donor vehicle and allow the idle to settle to approximately 1500 rpm before attempting to start in the receiving vehicle. then turn the key and make sure not to push the gas pedal too hard during the first few starts – this can put considerable stress on the starter motor when turning a flat/dead unit, increasing the chance of permanent damage…
7. After starting, let it run at a low rpm until the rpm rises to more than 2 km (2000). Disconnect the cables in the reverse order they were first attached: First disconnect the red clamp from the positive terminal which is the dead battery and then the negative clamp from the negative terminal of the work unit… Finally disconnect the black clamp from the negative terminal of the dead battery Finally!!!
Connecting jumper cables incorrectly or using faulty equipment can cause potentially harmful situations such as sparks flying out near exposed wires and fire hazards associated with faulty wiring.
