Freelance writers are just freelance writers. When you buy a newspaper, read a blog, or buy a magazine, you might think that all the articles are written by full-time employees. But most of them are usually written by freelancers, who send articles to editors, write the articles, then publish and get paid. In my case, I love the flexibility and freedom to write for whomever I want.

At its best, freelance writing is about coming up with an interesting idea and getting paid to write about it.

Speaking of getting paid, there are two common ways to get paid; flat fee or literally. (For print magazines, $1 per word is a typical rate, so a 2,000-word feature would pay $2,000).

Paying by the hour sometimes happens, but it’s pretty rare. Some predatory publications will ask you to write for free. In fact, you should never do this.

The biggest mistake most writers make is never getting started. I don’t know how many people say they want to write a book or an article, but keep putting it off.

The second biggest mistake writers make is about money. Many new writers are afraid to ask about money or contracts; don’t be afraid The only people who are afraid to tell you how much they’re going to pay you are the ones who aren’t paying you. Many new writers feel embarrassed or ashamed of their work and don’t feel comfortable defending themselves.

If you do get the job, I recommend looking over the contract carefully or joining an organization that provides contract advice to writers, such as the Writers Guild.

In my case, I started writing very short blog posts for $50 each. A few years later I worked on a National Geographic project for a low five figure salary.

If you don’t have experience, I’d start thinking of freelance writing as a side hustle that you can turn into a career with practice. I think a new writer should focus on publications that pay the lowest percentage per article. In truth, the price of the course was comparable to a respectable piece. The idea is that you should recover (or more!) with your first job or two.

As you move up the ladder, so to speak, $1 per word is the typical rate for major publications. Of course, an important article in a leading journal can bring in even more money. Ta-Nehisi-Coates describes how earning $2 a word ($16,000 for an 8,000-word story) at The Atlantic changed his life.

You can make six figures as a freelance writer, especially if you do something like technical writing or have a lot of corporate clients, but there are easier ways to make a lot of money. If your only goal is to make as much money as possible and you don’t care what you do to make money, then writing is not the best path for you.

Having the patience to review your work is far more important than any qualification. One of the mistakes that beginners make is to think that the first draft is ready to be sent. Writers often edit their work before showing it to an editor, in which case they get edited even more.

However, getting advice and experience from the school, our course or simply talking to writers will help you pick up the skills faster. If you have a degree or want to study, that’s great. But don’t give up on your dreams just because you didn’t go to journalism school or Harvard. (If you’ve done these, don’t give up on your dreams!)

I had a rather unconventional path. I’m from Charlottesville, VA, but I studied at the University of Hong Kong. I didn’t have family or friends there, I wanted to see something new. Some people said it was dangerous and would hurt my career prospects, but actually I think doing something different taught me a lot and gave me more to write about.

I got better little by little by reading great authors and practicing on my own, but it was only through the advice and mentoring of other writers that I really got better.
