In the ever-increasing competition among college applicants, writing an effective and sincere college recommendation letter is one way high school teachers can help students stand out from the competition. Every year, I write recommendations for a dozen students, often at the most prestigious universities in the country. Here are some things I learned along the way:
How To Ask A Professor For A Letter Of Recommendation (with Examples)
It is okay to ask a student to give a list of achievements and extracurricular activities. In fact, many professors require students to provide a quick resume before writing the letter! You can use these details to fill in more personal details. However, if you find that you have no personal data to add, you need to consider whether you are the right person to write that student’s recommendation.
If I feel I don’t know a student well enough or feel uncomfortable recommending them for any other reason, I politely decline the request. I usually tell these students to ask a teacher who knows them well.
Your letter is a business letter and requires a business letter format. If possible, write the letter to the specific college or scholarship advisor, but
Both are acceptable greetings if your letter is used for multiple applications. Use a period instead of a comma. When sending a letter, be sure to print it on your school’s paper.

Try to open your letter with something that the person in charge of screening hundreds (maybe thousands) of recommendation letters will remember. I like to start with a funny or poignant story that illustrates who the student is and how others see them.
Be sure to use only the student’s full name followed by the first name for the first reference. In my opinion, my favorite strategy is to end the paragraph with a single sentence that highlights the student’s strongest characteristics. You also want to let the university know the context of your relationship: how you know the student and how long you have known him.
. Between test scores, transcripts, and the dozens of questions on the application, admissions representatives have a wealth of information about an applicant’s academic and extracurricular experiences.
What university representatives want to know is how the student fits into their environment. Give specific examples

Has the student achieved – have they overcome obstacles or faced any challenges to reach their goals? I usually write two short paragraphs for the body. Sometimes, the first consults the character with academics and the last refers the character to extracurricular activities. Other times, I use the student’s characteristics as the main focal points. Colleges look for how the student goes beyond the typical school experience.
Conclude with a sincere statement of recommendation for the student to the university of his choice. When submitting a recommendation to a single university, use the university’s name or logo in your recommendation. If you know about the specific college, say why you think the student is a good match.
For a recommendation that is used for multiple applications, such as the Common App, omit specific references.
Tip: I return to using the student’s full name in my final reference to students in the letter.

The length of the entry letter is two-thirds to a full page, single-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman font for printed letters or 11-point Arial font for electronically submitted letters. If your letter is too short, you will appear less impressive to the applicant; If it’s too long, you might be insincere or boring.
Finally, remember that you are writing a recommendation for an academic institution. Your reputation and credibility as a teacher rests on your letter. When proofreading, check for active voice, correct grammar, and a formal but warm tone. (Consider the use of grammar!) If you are unsure of the content or conventions you have used in your letter, ask another teacher who knows the student to read your letter and provide additional insight.
Good luck to you and your students this college admissions season! Let your pride in your students resonate in your letters of recommendation for them, and let them reach their university.
