This creates a sustainable environment for businesses with the potential to thrive in all markets. This further encourages the government to support startups and offer grants to help them thrive.

SBIR offers federal grants to emerging companies, encouraging them to engage in research and development. The grant aims to commercialize its research and development through a prize-based initiative.
If an entrepreneur has a for-profit company and meets the requirements, he or she can receive these grants to work for scientific merit and technological innovation.
STTR is quite similar to SBIR and helps startups and small businesses by funding research and development. However, unlike SBIR, companies must be formally affiliated with a research institution to receive this grant.
Through the Community Navigator pilot program, the federal government offers grants to startups and small businesses ranging from $1 million to $5 million.

Companies that meet the criteria can receive investments from the EDA on a permanent basis to finance projects related to construction, non-construction, research and evaluation, higher education, technical assistance, and more.
These grants open up multiple opportunities for startups struggling to scale. While all of these grants are reliable and offer some help to entrepreneurs, SBIR and STTR are the ones that get the most attention and are in high demand.

In the first phase, the agencies assess the feasibility, potential, scope and technical merits of the company in question before proceeding with the grant. This phase deals with the preliminary research and development required to start the company.
In the case of SBIR, the grant does not exceed $150,000 in total costs over a 6-month period. As for the STTR, the limit is again $150,000 in total expenses, but over a one-year period.
After evaluating the authenticity and potential of a business, SBIR and STTR provide a maximum of $1,000,000 in total spending over a 2-year period. This is when a company has found its place in the market and is facing a difficult journey.
This phase is dedicated to the pursuit of the objectives arising from the first two phases to market the products/services for the desired traction. At this stage, no SBIR or STTR grants are awarded to startups.
