As a writer, I always charge per word. I, personally, am not a big believer in the time exchange model. I also think that hourly standards tend to unfairly penalize work and reward inefficiency. In my opinion, clients should pay me for the product I provide, not for my time. What might take me two hours to write might take my client ten hours to create. And even with some time invested, some clients may not get the quality of writing I can provide.

The great thing about Fiverr’s system is that it makes it easy to pay writers based on the work they do, not time. In fact, there isn’t really an option to charge by the hour. To me, this is a perfect arrangement. Long word counts, multiple iterations, and turnaround times are exactly what customers should pay for. Also, Fiverr makes it very easy to create custom requests and projects. So really your gigs are often just a jumping-off point to connect with your customers. You can easily sell your work based on the needs of each project.
One last point about Fiverr: it allows you to charge as little as $5, so it’s great for beginners who just want to build their experience.
LinkedIn launched its own free version, like Upwork or Fiverr. That’s another option you have when using LinkedIn to find writing jobs. However, another option is to contact businesses directly that may need your help.

Some businesses may want to create a website or newsletter but think it’s impossible because they have no idea how to write a product description or newsletter copy. These people may really want a “copywriter” but don’t know what those jobs are or where to find them.
Not all writers will want to work with “green” clients. It can be difficult to apply for businesses that are still trying to figure out exactly what they want and need. However, if you are just starting out, learning how to communicate and sell your services to companies in this area will give you the opportunity to gain a customer base without competition.
