My favorite resource book for teaching phonics skills to children is Phonics Pathways: Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling

Beginning Reading Help: Teach Short Vowel Sounds With Free Online Books From Starfall

Here are some pages from Phonics Path: Clear Steps to Easy Reading and Perfect Spelling that teach short vowels.

I copied this page onto thick paper and made a bookmark. This is a great tool to help readers remember short vowels. (a – ant, e – practice, i – itch, o – octopus, u – umbrella)

I love how the reader is taught to blend from beginning to end. Teaching readers to blend vowels instead of stopping after the first consonant is called body-final blending. The hyphens between letters in this book indicate a pause for the reader.

Phonics Pathways Booster includes a 35-minute CD that demonstrates the individual sounds made by letters and letter groups. Sometimes, even adults have difficulty hearing and pronouncing the different sounds of words. Are you looking for free online books for children? Every teacher and parent should know about these free websites and apps that allow children to read books online for free.
