It’s easy to make your hair look boring, but if you add a simple bandana, whether it’s a low ponytail, a high top knot, or anything in between, I’ve got you covered.

All you really need for this look is your trusty favorite bandana. You can use silk, cotton, whatever you prefer! There are so many options to buy now that there’s no way you can’t find one that fits your personal style.

Also, if you’re afraid of bulky bandanas, you can always opt for scrunchy versions or super thin bandanas like this one. This helps take the guesswork out of it and can make the style a little less intimidating! Below are a few personal favorites.

First up, half up. There are actually two ways you can do this. Or go long with your bandana as above (cross it in a triangle style) so the sides are long and flowing. Or below as you see with a full top knot.

Folding it hamburger style will make it shorter and thicker on both sides. I guess it just depends on your preference, but it’s a good thing to keep in mind when adding a bandana to a ponytail.

There are actually two ways you can fold a bandana! You can even do a half top knot if you want to add a little more glam to your hair. You can check out my half-height tutorial here.

And the ridiculous fabric. Who doesn’t like that? This is a great option for messy hair that you don’t want to deal with. You know those days when you just want to put our hair on top of your head and call it a day? And that’s it. But with a complete stylish upgrade.

It’s great for long hair to put it in a big messy topknot and wrap a bandana around your big messy bun. I love this fun retro feel.

This messy hair makes it feel fresh and like you put in a lot more effort than you actually did. It’s also a great color and unexpected addition to our standard messy bun that needs to be picked up on a lazy day.

I’ll be honest, this bandana headband look is SO not me. It’s such a fun idea, but it’s not something you’ll see wearing around town. I still want to share this with you because I think it’s a really fun way to wear your hair and incorporate a bandana.

It’s a really retro look with a bit of a side twist. You can either tie a knot at the bottom of the neck so you can’t see it and just leave it as a headband.

Either tie it at the top or the side. I really like the little knots that pop out for a little more texture.

Simple Ways To Style A Bandana In Your Hair

To fold a bandana to make a great headband, simply lay the bandana on a flat surface to begin folding. This will make it easier and more convenient when you have to wrap it around your head. You can fold it in half to make a big triangle.

Then start extending it to the top of the triangle. You can fold the tape into the long rectangle you are making to keep it from sticking.

I love it and sometimes forget to rock the low laugh button. Simply pull your hair into a ponytail, and if you pull it around 2 or 3 times, on the last one, just pull until your ends are close enough for a full loop.

You can also do a big messy low bun, but I thought this was a cute version that was easy to dress up. Tie a bandana around a hair band (either long or short) to achieve the look. I first mentioned my love of bandanas when I shared a list of summer capsule wardrobe essentials. And something I’m really excited to do more of on my blog is really show you how to wear these essentials – and give you ideas to do more with what you already have.

I had so much fun styling this special little red bandana this season! I’ve used it in my hair, around my wrist and around my neck in a few different styles! All that to say, I can’t rate it highly enough.

You’ve probably seen (or will) see this little pig in a costume all over the blog and Instagram. It has quickly become my favorite accessory of the season and I don’t even forget when I need to get it. So much so that I just bought 2 more colors while I was at Madeville last week. I find that it takes a boring or boring outfit for something really fun; It’s such an easy setup complement that often acts as a “third element” I need to take a look.

I haven’t personally tried all of these ways, but I still wanted to share all the different ways you could potentially wear a bandana if you want to try it yourself. I will give examples of the ways I wear my bandana when I get the picture.

How To Wear A Bandana For Extra Game Day Style

First things first, let’s talk about ways to wear a bandana on your head – because we have a few variations here.

Wearing this as a headband is probably my favorite because it’s so easy. I’ve been doing this (and #3) all summer so far! It’s great if you want to keep hair out of your face or when it’s hot (also all summer in Dallas). Just wrap the bandana around your head, then either leave your hair down, half up or in a top knot. It all looks good! You can leave the knot behind or on top of your hair. I think both look beautiful depending on what I’m going for. The knot in the front definitely adds a girlier touch, which is fun.

I also like to do this with ribbon, but a bandana is so fun around a ponytail. It adds some softness to a regular ponytail with almost no effort. You can go low or high, but I usually go high. Pro tip: Use a hair band first and then tie a bandana for more support.

This is similar to method #1 (as a headband), except tie it back under your hair, tying it on top of your head for a cute little bow-like look. I also wear this when I’m at the beach a lot – it’s such a cute look!

How To Tie A Bandana

Moving on to the ways you can wear your bandana as a necklace, because there are actually quite a few variations on how to wear your bandana around your neck!

Another way to wear your bandana is as a choker, as you can see in the outfit above. This way of wearing my bandana took me a minute to get comfortable, but I love how it looks with an open neckline like this dress. The trick is to make sure you tighten the bandana very tightly so all the loose ends are secured. This works best when you use a small, square bandana like the one on the model.

This might be my favorite way to style a bandana at the moment. It’s just great, isn’t it? Since my favorite bandana is red, I go for an Americana combo with a simple white shirt and denim shorts. It feels like summer to me! I also love it with a nice denim, white or black dress. Actually any color combination will depend on the bandana/scarf color you are using. If you’re wearing this style, just keep the earrings minimal or too much.

I’ve never personally worn it (yet!), but I’ve seen girls make a real outfit by wearing their bandana like this. i did
