The style you land on depends a lot on your hair texture and the final look you want.

One of the most common styles to start, comb coils are made by twisting small sections of hair with the teeth of a rat tail comb or coil twist comb. Just take a section of hair at the end, insert the fine-toothed comb and start twirling until the hair forms a spiral.
To maintain this style, Holder says, “You want to make sure you’re maintaining moisture at all times with a hair oil of your choice and wearing a scarf at night.”

As the name suggests, this style is created by placing sections of hair between the palms of your hands to help the strands find their shape. This look is not only good for styling you or keeping places, but it’s also a good choice to start your places. By leaving the palm rollers, the hair will naturally close over time. Decide how big you want your sections to be before you start rolling the palm and make sure they are as even as possible.
Depending on your hair type, you may find it difficult to keep it from unraveling, so try two-strand twists instead. Like palm rolls, two-strand twists are their own style, but they can also be left to grow out for a fuller, thicker end result. You need at least a few inches of hair to form two strand twists (at least four inches will give you the best results). You can use a palm rolling or twisting comb to hold the twists as they grow.
Braids (or braids) can be the go-to style for people with a tighter hair structure to prevent unraveling in the early stages of the place, especially when the hair is wet. Keep in mind that braided locs will not be circular like rolled or twisted ones; since the braid is flat, your spots will be too. What Is The Best Way To Start Locs?
Because of their small size, sisterlocks have a lot of versatility when it comes to styling, making this starter style a favorite for those who like to switch up their look. Because this is such an intensive process that requires the use of a specific technique, this type of starting location must be done by a certified sisterlock consultant. “Sisterlocks are a hair care system that requires training, and you should make sure your stylist is experienced in sisterlock education,” says Holder. “The initial installation can vary between 16-18 hours depending on the length and thickness of your hair.”
This is the technique to use if you are starting out with longer hair and want instant results (hence the name instant locs). While it can take years and years to grow some of the other startup site styles into mature sites, instant sites give you the look right away. This technique involves using a crochet to keep your hair naturally loose.
This startup location method is exactly what it sounds like. If you don’t have the patience to grow out mature locs, loc extensions can be added to your hair for a faux loc style that looks like the real thing. Holder recommends using “afro kinky loose hair because it’s lightweight and can be dyed and manipulated like real dreadlocks.”
This faux loc style is easily identified by the wide curls at the ends of each loc. The way to achieve this look is to loosely wrap the braided hair around the braided sections of hair to create a longer fake part.
How To Care For Locs
If your hair is on the wavy to straighter side, a back comb might be a good option to start your hair journey. Back combing involves combing/teasing the hair back (hence the name) with a metal comb and is best for people with hair on the longer side. Once the hair is sufficiently teased, you roll it into the desired shape with the palms of your hands.
Interlocking is a placemaking process that uses a crochet hook/blocking hook, Holder explains.
