With the introduction of portable jump starters based on lithium battery technology, I think one of these will become the perfect companion when riding a motorcycle, especially if you are going to be away for a few days. There have been a few times when I’ve been out riding my bike and the battery has died completely for various reasons. It’s a pain when you’re at home, if you’re traveling by bike, and it can be a trip-ruining event if you’re traveling alone. As you can see from the picture above, my bike currently lives outside so it is pretty much protected from the outside world, even with a cover on it it is severely affected by cold weather.

I looked at different products for this and ended up choosing the one from the company 1byone shown here, what I really liked was that it offered some extra security features that the other products I showed didn’t.

Every bike is different so I can’t provide definite instructions for all models, but I will show how it is done on my 954 Fireblade.

Access is easy via two bolts on the back of the seat. They are not immediately visible, so you have to tilt the corner of the seat back to expose the small bolts with the Allen wrench heads. They have a rounded outer edge so using a wrench is not possible, you can use some pliers but I always recommend using a suitable allen key so you don’t damage the bolts. I always keep a small set of these tools under the tail storage compartment of my motorcycle tool box, along with a few other basic tools like leatherwork and some duck tape that I wrap around pencils. As you can see, my bolts were a little rusty, but with a little force, they came off.

Please forgive me for removing the bolts because my 5 year old decided he wanted to be a photographer 🙂

With the bolts removed you should now be able to see the battery and terminals, there is usually a cap on the positive terminal that you need to remove but it is just a push fit so peel it off.

Connect the exposed terminals of the jump start device to the main power bank adapter (called a mouse!) and then to the main battery terminals. I would say run traditional jumper wires from positive to negative to negative, but the great thing about this device is that the current doesn’t flow until you press the button on the side of the jump start unit. This is great because you don’t have to start the bike as frantically as you would normally do with a car. With this device, you press a button on the side and electricity flows for 30 seconds, giving you enough time to start the bike.

The terminals on the bike battery are short and I have connected extra devices directly to the battery such as alarms/immobilizers but they are a bit fiddly and manage to clip onto the terminals.

After starting the bike, the device automatically shuts down. If it fails to start, the emergency starter will turn off after 30 seconds without causing any damage to the motorcycle or battery, this is a great safety feature and will not turn on within 30 seconds. Worse than a dead battery.

You should make sure the power bank is fully charged before attempting to start it up. Mine is fully charged, but as you can see after starting the bike it still says 100%!

I have to say these lithium based devices are awesome. I’ve been on a few motorcycle tours around Scotland in the past, 3-4 days long, and if I’m camping you can top up your phone at any time, with the added bonus of taking it with you as an emergency backup at night It is very safe to use as a battery or flashlight! What I particularly like is the 30 second countdown timer that always makes me a little nervous when jumping on the bike, plus the added benefit of the jump start adapter which provides polarity and reverse current protection so there is no damage to the battery. This is very important for bikes, but since they are small they cannot be abused like car batteries.

Here is a video of me using the jump starter video to make the jump if the embedded video doesn’t show up. I uploaded a second video showing the device turning off automatically after you start the bike.

While size is a killer, carrying a portable jump starter on a motorcycle has been impossible in the past because lead-based jump starters were too bulky and heavy, but this allows you to fit it into your kit, No need to consider weight. , especially if you’re going away for a few days, gaining a little weight is more important than peace of mind.

This is the unit I used with the 1byone jump starter from Amazon on their website 1byone.com Motorcycle batteries lose their charge after a certain amount of time, just like car batteries. When this happens, one of the biggest problems you’ll face is not being able to start your bike. If the battery is not completely drained, there is still a way to start the motorcycle to complete the journey. That’s why it’s always good to know how to start a motorcycle in such an emergency.

If the bike makes a clicking sound and the dash does not light up when you press the start button, the battery is dead. In this case, you have the option of replacing the battery or trying to start the bike without the battery.

A dead bike battery is always unpleasant and happens at the most inopportune times. Therefore, you need to know some methods and techniques for battery-free motorcycle jumping.

One of the best options is to use a jump start charger to start a motorcycle without a battery. These starters can be carried on the motorcycle to be ready for such emergencies. Furthermore, they are easy to use and will be of great help to you. You can do this:

When using this technology, you need to find someone willing to lend you their vehicle for a few minutes while the battery charges.

However, the caveat here is that this method should only be used when no other method is feasible. Because a car battery draws too much amperage, it can damage your bike battery or electrical system.

The best solution is to push the motorcycle first if the battery is dead. In this case, you don’t need special tools or jumper cables.

First, you need to disengage the ignition and put it into second or third gear. Then release the clutch, move the bike, engage the clutch and push. Once the bike accelerates, you must release the clutch. At this point, you should keep giving gas until the gas starts.
